Lymec calls for democracy in Belarus

“LYMEC CALLS FOR DEMOCRACY IN BELARUS”

European Liberal Youth – LYMEC – condemns the decision of the Belarussian
regime to expell a LYMEC member from Venstres Ungdom (Denmark) on
Wednesday and to deny entry to half of its election team. The 15 strong
team had been due to conduct exit-polling and the decision can only
indicate that the Lukashenko regime wants to avoid international scrutiny
and supress democratic opposition. Recent days have seen as series of
arrests, expulsions and a pattern of intimidation.

The young liberal activists currently gathered in Kiev, Ukraine, will
continue their protest against the unfair electoral process and in support
of the Opposition Bloc. LYMEC and Moloda PORA (in the process of becoming
a member of the European liberal family), are organising public action:

– on Friday 17 march, hundreds of lights will be lit in windows as a
symbol of our awareness of the political situation in Belarus
– on Saturday 18 march, activists will break a symbolic door in front of
the Belarussian embassy in Kiev, as a symbol of our wish to open Belarus
borders to the world
– and on Sunday 19 march (election day), activists will wash the
Belarussian embassy building as a symbol of our commitment to fight
corruption and to clean the regime of dictatorship

Pietro Paganini, LYMEC Vice-President said: ‘´It is already clear today
that these elections will be neither free nor fair. We have two member
organisations in Belarus and we will continue our fight for democracy. We
set out to observe elections in order to guarantee a fair outcome but the
regime refuses to be subject to the basic standards that all true
democracies subscribe to. We are actively pursuing other methods of
supporting democracy in Belarus’´.

Stanislav Kucenko, Leader of Moloda PORA Council said: ‘´Journalists from
all the main Ukrainian media have been expelled from the country, as well
as the leader of our mother-party, Vladislav Kaskiv. It is obvious that we
are not welcome there. We have been at the avant-garde of the Orange
revolution, and ‘´Luka’´ now wants to prevent any spillover to Belarus.
But we will continue our actions against corruption and in favour of
democracy and human rights in the region. We have already asked the
Ukrainian Government to provide support to arriving political refugees’´.

No Lukashenko
